Choosing an equivalent product goes beyond checking a simple brand chart — it requires carefully matching technical data sheets (TDS) and OEM approvals.

Reading Technical Specifications (TDS)

The first step in choosing an equivalent is comparing the Technical Data Sheet (TDS) of the current oil and the proposed alternative. Core physical data such as kinematic viscosity (at 40°C and 100°C), viscosity index (VI), flash point and pour point should largely align.

OEM Approvals and Performance Classes

Even if two products share the same viscosity, their performance classes (for example DIN 51524 Part 2 or Part 3) may differ. Specific approvals required by the machine manufacturer (Bosch Rexroth, Denison, Siemens, etc.) must be clearly stated in the alternative product's technical data sheet.

Synthetic and Mineral Base Oil Compatibility

Even within the same category (for example ISO VG 220 gear oil), if a synthetic (PAO or PAG) equivalent is being substituted for a mineral-based oil, manufacturer catalogs should be checked to confirm whether the sealing elements (gaskets, o-rings) will remain compatible with the new chemistry.

System Transitions and Flushing

When two oils with different chemical structures or additive packages are mixed (for example calcium grease with lithium grease), the thickener structures can collapse. For a safe equivalent transition, the old oil in the machine system should be fully drained and flushed using an appropriate procedure.

Can two different brands' oils of the same viscosity be mixed?

Not recommended unless unavoidable. Even with matching viscosities, the chemical additive packages they contain (anti-wear agents, defoamers) may differ and react, creating sludge in the system.

How do we confirm a product is a true equivalent?

A true equivalent must: 1) share the same ISO VG class, 2) have the same base oil characteristics, and 3) fully meet the same OEM specifications and international standards (DIN, ISO, etc.).

How is the system's response measured after an oil change?

After the transition, the equipment's operating temperature, operating pressure, filter contamination rate and running noise should be monitored. For professional follow-up, regular Used Oil Analysis is recommended for the first few months.

What is flushing?

Flushing is the process of circulating special flushing oils to clean out old, contaminated oil, sludge and chemical residue from a system. It is mandatory, in particular, when switching to synthetic oils.
