Neat Cutting Oils
These are water-free oils applied directly. Their excellent lubricating (slipperiness) properties stand out more than cooling. Preferred for low-speed, heavy chip-removal operations (broaching, deep-hole drilling) and precision work with high corrosion risk.
Water-Soluble Oils (Coolants)
Known as emulsions or 'coolants,' these fluids are formed by mixing mineral oil with water via an emulsifier to a milk-white consistency. Combining water's excellent cooling power with oil's lubricity, they're used for general-purpose CNC turning and milling operations.
Semi-Synthetic and Full-Synthetic Fluids
Semi-synthetic fluids contain lower mineral-oil content plus synthetic additives — they're more translucent, cool more strongly, and resist bacteria better. Full-synthetic fluids contain no mineral oil at all, look like clear water, offer the highest cooling rate, and are generally used in very high-speed operations such as grinding.
Choosing Fluid by Machined Metal
Soft, sticky metals like aluminum need emulsions with special ester (lubricity) additives, while hard alloys like stainless steel or titanium require neat cutting oils or high-performance semi-synthetics with heavy EP (Extreme Pressure) additives.
