Food Contact Risk and HACCP

Under HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) principles, the food-contamination risk of every lubrication point in a factory is assessed. Bearings on mixers, conveyors and filling machines carry high risk and require specifically approved (food-grade) lubricants.

NSF H1 Class (Incidental Contact)

NSF H1-approved oils and greases are used at points with a possibility of 'incidental and accidental' contact with food (for example oven chains, belt bearings). These oils are formulated from non-toxic base oils (generally white oils or synthetic PAO) and safe additives.

Differences Between NSF H2 and 3H

NSF H2 oils are suitable for machinery used in a food-production facility but where contact with food is ABSOLUTELY excluded (for example, in an enclosed pump room). NSF 3H (Release Agents) describes release oils that directly contact food (for example baking pans, meat-cutting knives) to prevent sticking.

Storage and Cross-Contamination Risk

If a factory uses both standard industrial oils and food-approved oils, food-approved products should be stored in a separate area, clearly labeled in distinct colors, and grease guns must be strictly separated to prevent cross-contamination.

Are NSF H1 oils harmless to health — can they be eaten?

NSF H1 oils are for incidental contact, are not food additives and cannot be eaten. As long as the amount present in the product does not exceed legal limits (typically 10 ppm), they are formulated from safe components that don't harm human health.

Are Halal and Kosher certifications required for food-grade oils?

Depending on the market your production facility serves, Halal and Kosher certifications proving that your NSF H1-approved lubricants contain no animal fats or prohibited substances are commonly required.

Is the performance of food-grade greases lower than standard greases?

First-generation food-grade greases made with mineral white oils were weaker in performance. Today, however, NSF H1 greases made with PAO synthetic base oils and advanced thickeners (such as calcium sulfonate complex) offer performance and heat resistance on par with the heaviest industrial greases.

How is food-grade approval verified?

The validity of the certificate can be confirmed by looking up the NSF registration number on the product's manufacturer label or TDS in the international NSF White Book database.
