Heavy-Industry Conditions: Shock Loads and High Temperature

Equipment on rolling-mill and press lines is subject to constant stop-start cycles, low-speed operation and sudden shock loads. These conditions thin and tear the oil film. Products used in such settings are expected to form chemical barriers that go beyond their physical limits.

The Role of Viscosity and EP Additives in Gear Oils

Heavy-load reducers favor high-viscosity gear oils (ISO VG 320, 460 or 680). But viscosity alone can't prevent metal-to-metal contact — this is where Extreme Pressure (EP) additives come in, forming a phosphorus- or sulfur-based protective layer on gear surfaces to prevent micro-welding (galling).

Thickener Type Heat Resistance in Bearings

Bearings exposed to extreme heat cause standard soap-thickened greases like lithium to liquefy and abandon the bearing. This is why polyurea, calcium sulfonate complex, or lithium complex-based greases with a high dropping point are chosen. When switching, the current grease's thickener type must be compatible with the new one.

The Importance of Solid Lubricants (MoS2 and Graphite)

When temperature and load exceed limits (where the liquid or grease film disappears entirely), heavy-duty greases containing molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) or graphite are used to prevent friction. Solid lubricants embed in metal pores, providing emergency dry lubrication.

Matching and Evaluation by OEM Criteria

Even if two brands' heavy-duty products appear similar on paper, formulation differences mean they can't be treated as equivalent (X=Y). Final suitability between products requires OEM approval. Can standard lithium grease be used in heavily loaded bearings?

No, standard lithium greases lose mechanical stability under heavy shock loads and liquefy, running out of the lubrication point.

Is molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) used in every bearing?

No, it isn't used in high-speed bearings (such as electric motors or fans) because the solid particles cause vibration and heating — it's preferred more in slow-turning, shock-loaded bearings (for example excavator pins).

Can ISO VG 320 be used instead of ISO VG 460?

Generally not. Low-speed, high-torque reducers in heavy industry need a thick (460 or higher) viscosity to maintain film thickness — a thinner oil causes premature wear.

Is mixing high-temperature greases dangerous?

Absolutely dangerous — mixing different types (for example bentonite clay with lithium complex) can cause sudden hardening or liquefaction, locking up the bearing within seconds.
